Lynne D. Richardson, MD, FACEP, is the Mount Sinai Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine and Health Equity Science and the founding Co-Director of the Institute for Health Equity Research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is a practicing emergency physician, a nationally recognized expert in health services research, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Richardson has made highly influential contributions to eliminating healthcare disparities in both the research and policy arenas. An expert on community engagement and a national thought leader in the ethics of conducting emergency research, her work investigating issues of access, quality and equity has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid as well as various foundations. She served on the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) of the Centers for Disease Control and as Chair of the ACD Health Disparities Subcommittee. 

Her current research funding includes an NIH/National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering award to develop a pulse oximeter that is accurate across all skin tones, an NIH/NIMHD grant to assess segregation in ambulatory practices and its impact on care quality, and an NIH Center grant to support minority health and health disparities research. She also directs EM’s first T32 Research Fellowship Training Grant and is one of the specialty’s most respected mentors. She has partnered with the Mount Sinai Health System leadership to embed the measurement of equity into all quality improvement activities across the health system and to eliminate negative and stigmatizing language from patients’ electronic health records. 

A native of Harlem, New York, Dr. Richardson graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Bachelor’s degrees in Life Sciences and Management and received her MD degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. A member of the American College of Emergency Physicians for more than forty years, she is Past Chair of the ACEP Public Health Committee and has served on the Research Committee, Scientific Review Subcommittee, Clinical Emergency Department Registry Committee, ACEP-SAEM Federal Research Funding Workgroup; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, ACEP Report Card Task Force, and on the Board of Trustees of the Emergency Medicine Foundation. Her many contributions to the College and to the specialty have been recognized: she was the 2018 recipient of the ACEP Outstanding Achievement in Research Award, the 2014 recipient of the Colin C. Rorrie, Jr. Award for Excellence in Health Policy and, most recently, the 2025 recipient of the Leon L. Haley, Jr. Award for Excellence in Diversity, Inclusion, & Health Equity.
